Donald Baechler is an internationally acclaimed American Contemporary artist whose work is of a style that is at once childlike and sophisticated.

Perhaps best known for his contributions to the Neo-Expressionist movement in the 1980s and as a “second-generation Pop Artist,” Baechler was heavily influenced by Andy Warhol and Cy Twombly.

Describing his interest in a subject’s formal qualities, rather than its conceptual associations, Baechler remarked, “I’m interested in discreet and very mute objects, and I’ve never really been interested in the narrative or psychology of these things.”

In an attempt to re-teach himself to draw, Baechler developed a unique visual vocabulary with an emphasis on naivety. 

As a part of this pursuit, he looked toward the artistic production of children and the mentally ill.

Like much of Baechler’s oeuvre, “Flowers” is a nostalgic image—an everyday subject that, because of its simplicity and primitive rendering, ignites the viewer’s nostalgia for childhood.
